Tanya Pivovar (BSW, MSW, RSW) is a committed counsellor and advocate
with more than 20 years’ experience. Tanya holds a Bachelor of Social Work from
the University of Victoria and a Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University. She has worked with children, youth, families and clients of all ages. Tanya has experience in youth and
adult court systems within Canada and internationally. Her expertise involves working with individuals going through diverse lived experiences. Throughout her Social Work career Tanya has had the opportunity to use many different counselling tools, inclusive of narrative approaches,
solution focussed, trans-theoretical models of change, multicultural approaches, mediation and conflict resolution. Tanya had the opportunity to share this knowledge with her students as a sessional lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of Regina.
Tanya has fond memories of growing up on a farm in the Saskatchewan prairies. During her upbringing she had the opportunity to learn about gardening, farming and making pies. Tanya has two cats who bring her joy and happiness daily. As part of her own self-care, she enjoys picking up her guitar for musical inspiration on a regular basis. She finds music to be an empowering and healing presence in life. She enjoys bringing music and different expressions of art into journeys. This speaks to how the core of her practice is learning with her clients, as we all have stories to share with the world around us.
Tanya’s story includes how she has worked with every kind of client and every type of system and most diagnosis. Although she doesn’t have a specialization per se, she loves working with teenagers and young people, perhaps more than the average counsellor does. She wants it to be a bit more about her full identity and more than her practice - about possibilities with clients rather than “fixing them”.
Tanya believes:
“If it is in speaking their word that people,
by naming the world transform it, dialogue imposes itself as the way
by which they achieve
significance as human beings” (Freire, 2002, p. 88)
